An Initial Coin Offering, also commonly referred to as an ICO, is a fundraising mechanism in which new projects sell their underlying crypto tokens in exchange for bitcoin and ether. It's somewhat similar to an Initial Public Offering ( IPO ) in which investors purchase shares of a company.

ICO which stands for Initial Coin Offering, is a new coin offering method by developers as a form of fundraising before the coin is launched. Smiley

It is a vehicle to gather funds for a project to do with a new cryptocurrency a company is planning to offer to the public.
It works sort of like what an IPO does for a new asset on the stock market for a company that is publically released.
