Title: I need a company name [resolved]
Post by: chaord on March 03, 2011, 11:09:46 PM
Hi Guys -
So most of my due diligence with regard to the bitcoin-related businesses I am starting has been done under a parent company called "Chaordic Ventures."  While I like the term "chaordic" (hence my forum name), it doesn't really brand that well for anyone not familiar with Dee Hock's ideas about organizations, and people are uncertain of its pronunciation.   Needless to say, it's time to better brand the parent company that will be formed. So here's what I'm looking for:

  • I need something like ________________ [Ventures/Enterprises/etc], LLC.
  • The .com domain name (without the LLC) needs to be available for registration at a major registrar like http://www.dotster.com
  • I do NOT want the terms "bitcoin", "btc" or anything eluding solely to bitcoin to appear in the name.
  • The suffixes of "ventures," "enterprises," are optional.
  • I'm looking for something that embodies the ideas of: nimble, yet robust, trustworthy, distributed,
  • I'm not opposed to new words, or words that sound like other words (eg expedia), as long as it's easy to pronounce and spell.

So please, give me some ideas.  If I use your suggestion I'll pay you 30 BTC.  If you don't want to share your ideas in public, please email me at [email protected]

Overall this should be a fun exercise, and who knows, maybe your recommendation will be a part of history, so please have fun and let the name generation commence....!

I like using "pronounceable password generators" to come up with names for things. I just go through the results and pick one that sounds good, oftentimes modifying it slightly.

People worry a lot about company names, yet in the long run they matter very little. What really counts are the business operating names and the trademarks.

For example, few people know or care that MtGox is operated by Pongamia Cultivation Institute SA. To its users, the service is "Mt. Gox".

And companies with random sounding names do just fine. "IBM", for example. Or even "International Business Machines".

So I think Chaordic Ventures is perfect!

But as you want alternative suggestions, I'll offer "Agoramatic" and "Gaia Peer".

First of all, a name should have NOTHING to do with the service being offered.  The best names are easily remembered and generic.  For example:

Auctioning of goods . . . e-bay
Selling of books . . .  Amazon
Search engine . . . google

My suggestion  . . .

AARDVARK QUARK

You will be the first listing in everything alphabetical.  Quarks make up particles, the fundamental stuff of all matter.  It rhymes.  It is the only suggestion that everyone will remember a week from now without trying.  Now, where my thirty bitcoins be at?

Sounds like you'd like a name that's safe rather than catchy so you can be taken more seriously no? If so then I'd use a european-sounding last name with a generic suffix. For example:

Van Buren Enterprises

Petrovic Group

Lombardi Technologies

Schmidt & Wolf Ventures

Alonso & Associates

etc.

I don't know if his was meant seriously or in jest, but...

This is the closest reply to being right on.

If the name is to be used in branding -- identifying your product / service to your customer,  then make no mistake about it.... it is critical.   A bad name can ruin a great concept or company.    When all else is equal, people often (even subconsciously) go with the company with "the cool sounding name".

It really bothers me a lot when I like a company, but I hate its name.  I find mused constantly having to apologize for the stupid name... as I'm recommending the company to friends.

So pick a cool name.    Not a retarded one.

Also,  the name should either mean Nothing... or if it is going to mean something, it should mean that to every potential customer.  It's meaning is important to customers .... not you.

It must be easy to spell.
it must be easy to pronounce.
It must not be a misspelling.
The name alone must be available as a dot-com tld.

Once you have 5 or 10 favorites,  call your friends and simply ask them all which one they like better.

Don't tell them you're going to...  but....

Three days later, call each of your friends AGAIN. But this time tell them you want to know ALL the names they can remember (regardless of whether it wad their favorite or not).

If they can remember it, and spell it back to you absolutely correctly,  three days later.... without being told to remember it....  then you have a winner.

OK, so you have a contest and are willing to award 30 BTC to the winner but then decide to cancel the contest after participation in the contest took place.

Hmm...

Wouldn't that be like getting people to participate in a competition with a promise of an award to the winner but then cancel the competition after it took place.

I would think you actions deserve an -10 credibility points, not to mention no one will try to help you again. Better change the UserName.

Conclusion: -10 Credibility

I'm sorry if I was misleading.  In my original post, I very clearly stated that I will award 30 BTC if I use the suggestion.  That being said, as a token of good faith, I have decided to split the reward between Ardvark Quark and Mystaceus.  There were many of great suggestions put forth, but as the weeks went on, those two were in fact the most memorable to me.  Unfortunately they did not meet the criteria for my business model.

Most importantly this was merely supposed to be a fun exercise for the community.  I look forward to serving you all soon.

[Edit:  btc addresses have been solicited from the winners via PM]
[Edit:  the name we decided on for the time being is TruCoin Technologies]
